2020 is a big year, therefore we are expecting the building, interior design, architectural and construction trends to be even bigger.

Every year new products come out and new trends emerge. This article will explore the new and upcoming trends which will take 2020 by storm and which popular trends are here to stay from 2019.

Living Smart

Technology has always been designed to make our lives and everyday tasks easier as it allows us to use smart devices and appliances to create ‘smarter homes’. In the past, appliances were created and sold with the main benefit to make housewives lives easier, now gadgets and automated systems assist you to complete everyday tasks, such as shopping lists, and predict and control your home’s settings, for example, the temperature, lighting and security.

Amazon, Google and Windows have all developed virtual assistants which allow you to get answers quickly and play your favourite song by just the sound of your voice. In addition to this, brands such as Samsung have released smart appliances, such as ovens, microwaves and washing machines which can be controlled by your phone. These modern technologies that enable you to set personalised reminders, plan your schedules and start the dinner are turning smart homes into intelligent homes!

Going Green

Going green will always be a trend as more and more people are becoming aware of how their actions affect the environment. There is a new environmental commitment forming as people are learning how what we fill and build our homes with effects our home planet. There are many ways to ‘go green’ in your home, from saving energy and eating smarter to using less plastic, but now the furniture industry is making it easier for us to do this as they are using more sustainable materials.

For example, recycled plastic is now being used to make lounge furniture and bricks. Beds, tables, chairs and sofas are being created from recycled cardboard and stools are being made from recycled newspapers. In addition to this, IKEA, one of the biggest furniture suppliers in the world, has set a goal to use 100% recycled materials by 2020.

Creating Your Space

Designing the inside of your home is a personal, intimate and bespoke affair as it reflects your creativity, style and attitude. In the upcoming year, we are going to see a variety of new interior design trends. Less is always more, minimalism is going to be a big trend for 2020 as having less clutter and ‘stuff’ in a room can make it feel a lot more relaxed and calm. We will start to see new ‘cosier’ colour trends that will focus more on nature and the different tones of natural elements, for example, sand, wood, greens and sky blue.

In addition to this, contrasting colours from different ends of the spectrum are going to be seen much more as they help to create a unique and funky space. Geometric designs have become increasingly popular over the last few years as they are a fun trend that allows you to add style and character to a space and it appears they are here to stay.
